How to Shop Holiday Sales Without Overbuying

Avoid the “it was on sale” trap. Here’s how to shop smart this holiday season without sabotaging your style or your wallet.

Black Friday: The Scam We Keep Falling For

Black Friday (one of the biggest shopping holidays of the year) has become one of the biggest scams.

Not because I'm too good for a sale, but because it's evolved into a sleazy, played-out money grab. Consumers are wising up and keeping their money right where they can see it (rightfully so).

I don't want you blindly falling into the trap of buyer's remorse or, worse, pre-hoarding a million "but it was on sale" items that collect dust and never see the light of day.

Here's how to shop holiday sales strategically so you only bring home pieces you'll actually wear.

Why Holiday Sales Mess With Your Head

There's an emotional high that surges through your body when you see that 70% OFF sign in big, bright red. It sounds like the shopping gods have opened up heaven just for you.

When, actually, all the retailers did was mark merchandise up so much that 70% off won't cut into their profit margins. Instead, it's putting their return right where they need it to be.

Those doorbusters and markdowns send dopamine surges through your body (similar to dopamine dressing, but in a way that doesn't serve you), temporarily blocking rational thinking.

If you buy something on sale and it has no purpose other than the fact that it was expensive, you didn't actually save money. You lost money.

That $200 dress marked down to $60 isn't a deal if it hangs in your closet with the tags on for six months. You're still out $60 for something you don't wear. The retailers win when you buy things you don't need simply because the price feels good.

Shop With Purpose, Not Panic

Audit Before You Shop.

I believe in strategizing shopping. It's literally a sport. Take inventory of what's in your closet BEFORE you even consider buying anything.

Take a photo or jot it down in your notes app (preferably) to refer back to as a shopping guide. You know how, when you make a grocery list, you don't get sidetracked and purchase things you don't need? Same principle.

Here's what to look for: Note the colors that dominate your wardrobe, identify the silhouettes you reach for most, pinpoint what's missing that would make getting dressed easier, and flag anything that needs replacing because it's worn out.

Consider your style uniform. This is a good time to replenish those essentials you wear all the time. Your style formula includes your go-to colors, preferred fits, and the lifestyle you're actually dressing for (not the one you wish you had). If you live in sneakers and jeans, that sale on stilettos isn't for you, no matter how good the discount is.

3 Questions to Ask Before You Add to Cart 🛒

Before anything goes in your cart, pause and ask yourself

1. Do I already have something like this?

2. Does it fit my style formula?

3. Will I wear it multiple ways?

If you already own three black sweaters, you don't need a fourth, even at 50% off. If it doesn't align with your colors, silhouettes, or lifestyle, it's not a deal. It's clutter. Can you style it at least three different ways? If you can only see it working with one outfit, put it back. If you can't answer yes to all three, walk away.

Quality Over Quantity

Before you buy, flip that tag and see what you're actually buying. The idea of getting a designer item on sale sounds like a win, but not when it's made of flimsy material that won't last a windstorm, let alone wear and laundering.

Look for quality materials. Check for quality construction with reinforced seams, sturdy zippers, and lined garments. And make sure the fabric weight is appropriate for the garment's purpose.

Black Friday is a great time to invest in pieces you've been eyeing but hesitated on at full price.

I believe in your wardrobe being a capsule of items you absolutely love. So if the math is mathing on something you've been dreaming about at full price, absolutely take advantage of the sale.
